sent on behalf of the Holy Father

To His Excellency, Paul Desfarges, SJ
Archbishop of Alger

It is with great sorrow that His Holiness, Pope Francis has learned the sad news of the airliner accident that has saddened the Algerian nation this Wednesday morning.  He is united in prayer and sadness with the families of all those who are touched by this drama, and the mourning of all Algerians.  He asks the Lord to welcome into his peace all those who have died and to comfort those who have been seriously wounded, while imploring divine assistance for all those who are caring for their needs.  Reassuring you of his closeness, the Pope calls for the abundance of the Spirit's gifts upon you and upon your local Church and the consolation of the Most High upon the entire nation of Algeria.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Secretary of State of His Holiness
