Telegram of His Holiness, Pope Francis
at the death of Cardinal Karl Lehmann

To His Excellency, the Most Reverend
Peter Kohlgraf
Bishop of Mainz
Mainz

With sadness, I learned the news of the death of His Eminence, Cardinal Karl Lehmann.  I express to you and to the faithful of the Diocese of Mainz, my sincere condolences, assuring you of my prayer for this accomplished servant who the Lord has called to himself following serious illness and suffering.

During his long service as a theologian and as Bishop, as well as in the role of President of the German Episcopal Conference, he helped the shape the life of the Church and of society.  His heart was always open to the questions and challenges of the time and willing to offer answers and direction inspired by the message of Christ, in order to accompany people along their own journeys, seeking out that which unites beyond the confines of professions, convictions and States.

May Jesus, te Good Shepherd grant to his faithful servant the fulfillment and the fullness of life in his heavenly kingdom.  With all my heart, I impart my Apostolic blessing to you, and to all those who mourn and remember the deceased Cardinal in your prayers.

Francis
